Optional Goals are your opportunity to do something that involves Information Technology, and that YOU are interested in.
The number of Optional Goals that you complete over the course of the year will determine your grade cap. If you do not complete any OGs, you are showing that you don't care about Info Tech, don't want to apply yourself, and aren't working to a very high level of achievement. If you complete lots of them, well, you are showing the opposite. You were told about OGs and how they affect your marks cap on the first day of class, and that information is on our Info Tech 9 main page.
The Optional Goals listed here, with all their steps and requirements, are NOT the only OGs that are available. If there is something you are interested in which is not listed here, you can complete a Project Proposal form (at the bottom of the page) and I will consider it. Please do not start working on an Optional Goal that I have not approved! You need to clear it with me, first.
In order for me to approve a self-designed project, it must meet at least the following requirements:
It should be Information Technology related (obviously)
It should take at least four hours of work to complete.
It should challenge the student (there should be something you have to work at or learn)
It MUST be appropriate for school
It should not duplicate another Goal or a Signpost Assignment
The proposal form must be completed, discussed with me, and approved before you begin the project.
When an Optional Goal is completed, you need to post it and its reflections piece in your e-portfolio, and complete the form on the "Required Goals" page, so I know it's been handed in. I will send you my comments. Since Optional Goals don't directly count for marks, they don't have a marking rubric...but I'm sure we can come to an agreement on how well you have completed them.
Optional Goals don't have hard-and-fast deadlines. They should be handed in as soon as they (and the reflections piece) are complete. The absolute last day I will accept OGs is JUNE 3rd, 2014. Please don't try to hand any in after this date.
While you may certainly work on your in-progress Optional Goals in class, most of the work on these may take place at home. In class, we are working on Signpost Assignments and Required Goals first--Optional Goals are for when SAs and RGs are done, or when it is impossible to work on them for some reason.
